When your site gets bigger there will be more things that need to get done. As the leader of the site you may want to look at higher a staff. I am not saying invest your money on people you don't even know. The truth be told a lot of people out there are willing to do the job free of charge. But things come with hiring a staff. Some jobs require the staff member to get into some things that basically control your hole site and may even contain personal information. So with all this at risk is it still worth getting help. Yes it is I have got to say having a staff can be one of the most enjoyable things with running a site and can also help lighten the load.
What should you take into consideration?
Think about everything before hiring. Some members of the staff will only need the littlest privileges in the forums others may need the Cpanel. So Trust is essential, get to know your staff. A good way is to allow the members to help out with what ever your site is whether it is like a video site or maybe a download site or just a social site. The more they help the more you can get to know there potential working ability. Maybe consider some people you already know and have them join your crew.
A little WARNING
Some people are very good deceivers. I have came across this my self and unfortunately it didn't end to my liking but I would like to help you out. If you are not paying your staff then you need to take this into consideration you may want to take it into consideration even if you are paying them. Some members have the vision of power and just want to be of more power then others. This most of time can mean that they will not be a good staff member. They may end up joining your staff and doing little to no work once they are in it and abusing there powers. If they ask you to be on the staff and beg and beg they may not be a big choice im not saying this is always the case some can end up to be a great staff member but others may end up to just cause you issues.
Separating the power.
Now you have a staff you want and you may not even know any of them. Trust is needed I will say again. But you need to know some things there is some members of the crew that have no need to have some privileges. Moderators shouldn't have any need for anything over your forum mod panel. Where you take the biggest risk is your designers and coders. You should make sure that your coders and designers are trustworthy cause they may be able to access almost a file on your website and destroy it. I recommend using Ftp accounts most coding and designing can be done from there and the Cpanel isn't needed for them. For those other things like installing forums they may need to be done from the Cpanel. This is when you need to do it your self or have someone who you know will never back-stab you.
With forums powers may be hard to separate as well. I would recommend modifying privileges to your liking. Remember titles are titles. Separate them up by power don't give them an admin title when they are a mod. This can cause power issues and other issues I don't recommend doing unless you have to. Limit admins they access the admin panel and can do a lot with the forums. Some coders may need access to the panel make sure that you can trust them and that they will listen to you. If you don't want abuse of powers to much I would recommended disabling delete posts to any one who isn't an admin and create a trash forums. This will allow you to see records of everything cause even if the post is modified you may be able to see what it said before. You can also do a sort of like soft delete. Some forums allow this. This is where the post appears deleted but to admin the post will show as deleted post and you can read the post.
Over all
You need to trust your staff and your judgment. Try to minimize powers. If you use passwords use multiple don't use the same one over and over again . I recommend using something like this http://www.pctools.c...uides/password/ make sure to use a very dynamic password allow numbers symbols letters caps etc. I wouldn't use Phonetics (e.g. Alpha - Bravo - Charlie). Remember that the unexpected could happen at any time so make sure you and your crew are close cause if you treat them badly and then you trust them it can bite you in the butt. Another thing maybe make some sort of staff room with quick links sign in emails etc
Hope this helped out and you and your staff have a great time together.

Good post, just want to add something but whenever I'm picking my staff I always, always write up a topic or I make a forum dedicated for people who are interesting in staff and even better there are various mods especially on forum softwares IPB, vB have modifications to set up a Staff Application form where people can sign-up limiting your members and finding the best of the best within a forum depending on the requirements placed within the modification, for example for a member to become a Moderator the member has to be a member for XX amount of days or have X amount of post(s) this also helps when looking into staff especially for forums.

Yes, thats a really good idea to have a set of regulated stats that the user much reach before applying for a job.
